Dr. Ahmar Mahboob is the founder and guiding force behind Lost Words Studio, a children’s book imprint created as a practical manifestation of his life’s work with language.

As an Associate Professor of Linguistics at the University of Sydney and a leading voice on language and equity, Dr. Mahboob (also known as Sunny-Boy Brumby and Prof Nomad) advocates for a “linguistics without borders.” This decolonial approach, which challenges traditional hierarchies and empowers marginalized voices, is the core philosophy of the Studio.

For him, Lost Words Studio is a space where the magic of words is used to validate a child’s inner world and empower them to find their own voice. He brings together his scholarly expertise and creative passion—which also extends to public writing and poetry—to curate stories that act as “compasses for the soul.” His mission is to publish books that are not only enchanting but also intellectually courageous, inspiring young readers to build a more hopeful world.
